LESSONS IN CHARCOAL BURNING AT OCCOMBE FARM

LESSONS IN CHARCOAL BURNING AT OCCOMBE FARM The BBQ season may seem a long way off, but now is your chance to learn the skills behind producing your own home-made charcoal, during a one-day Charcoal Burning Workshop at Occombe Farm, Paignton on Thursday 11 March.

Charcoal burning is an ancient craft where a high quality and high value product is made from low value and low quality timber - using off cuts from hedgelaying and coppicing. Home-produced charcoal beats that found in supermarkets, where the charcoal has often been produced overseas and contains chemicals. Not only does it negate the need for shipping but the cleaner charcoal that we make ourselves actually burns better too!

During the one-day workshop participants will be involved in the complete charcoal burning process including sourcing the raw material and siting of the kiln, laying the base and filling the kiln, lighting the kiln and controlling the burn. There is the option to return on Friday 12 March to help with emptying the kiln and bagging the end product - with the chance to take some of the charcoal produced home.

The workshop will be run by Torbay Coast & Countryside Trust rangers and costs £15, second day at no extra charge. Workshop runs 8am - 4pm. To book and for more information contact the Trust on 01803 606035, or book online here
