Education
Education is at the heart of Occombe Farm, our overall aim is to re-connect people with food and farming. We do this by opening the farm to the public and making it free, holding a wide range of public events and hosting school visits led by our trained rangers. We are continuing to develop what is available at the farm and the associated educational activities. Currently the following is available for visitors to enjoy: - farm shop, butchery and cafe
- farmyard home to our Ruby Red cattle
- 2km nature trail winding through our protected flower meadows
- bird hide
- straw bale education centre home to group visits
- apple orchard home to our chickens and ducks
- play area
- traditional breeds of pigs
- events and courses
Building on the above during 2009 we were successful with a bid to the Local Food Fund (Lottery) for a grant to fund our One Planet Food Project. This three year project will enable us to start growing at the farm and set up a vegetable box scheme. We are also building a second straw bale building which will be a Community Kitchen used to teach children and adults cooking. We will be hosting more local food events and courses and a Cookery Club for children.
